Slova estʹ – značene temno ilʹ ničtožno... Encounters with Words in the Russian Translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Anya v Strane Chudes) by Vladimir Nabokov

Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this article is to show how wordplay are reproduced in the Russian translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland done by Vladimir Nabokov. Firstly, based on the Duchess’s statement, we formulated a general idea of creating linguistic reality in Wonderland. We have determined that despite the fact that the author’s and the translator’s concepts are different, wordplay remain their essence. Then, we referred to Dirk Delabastita’s theoretical findings covering both their typology and translation strategies. Finally, we have established that in Nabokov’s translation one of the most frequent solutions is the replacement of original wordgames with their counterparts in Russian. Frequently, equivalents chosen by the translator do not match the original forms in terms of qualitative aspects. Then the translator resorted to such procedures (pseudoetymological figures, paronymy, homonymy) which do not cause severe losses in both the semantic and aesthetic layers.
