Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses Margaret Drabble’s A Summer Bird-Cage as a female Bildungsroman. Firstly, the role of education is addressed. A journey, in the physical and spiritual sense, is discussed in the third part. Marriage and motherhood are likewise relevant and the fourth section is focused on these elements. Finally, having compared the developmental paths of male and female characters in the traditional and contemporary female Bildungsroman, we arrive at the conclusion that this genre is flexible enough to allow for a transposition into modern times and into a different cultural environment.
