Summary/Abstract: China's rapid economic growth in recent decades and its rise as a great power in the international system has a milestone recognized by Chinese space researchers: the coming to power of Deng Xiaoping in 1978. This was the moment to launch the reforms that transformed China from an isolated and self-sufficient state in one of the greatest powers of our times.
