Summary/Abstract: The article presents basic findings about the development of the automotive industry in Poland in 1945–1989. The problems raised in the study are presented in chronological order, with particular regard to issues related to the state policy towards car owners, trade in vehicles, their availability, and automotive infrastructure. The source basis are archival documents produced by central institutions, existing literature on the subject and the press, both daily and specialist (automotive) papers
