Summary/Abstract: This study explores, in depth, current political and social aspects of polarization in the American public. Addressing various relationships between social attitudes, values and characteristics, the article examines their implications and identifications with political platforms. Social polarization, characterized by heightened levels of partisan bias, contempt, and disrespect is increasing, driven by partisan identity and political identity alignment. Party sorting – an increased correlation between policy opinions and partisan identification – is examined in the context of geographic, racial, and religious polarization. The explicit connection between social background and political leaning is reviewed in terms of growing polarization and its manifestation in the recent attempts of revocation of the Johnson Amendment. The partisan-ideological affiliation that has occurred in American society in recent decades has strengthened partisan identity and the bias, outrage, and division that result from it are contributing to deepening polarization.
