Summary/Abstract: In principle, the theatrical work of the German opera director Peter Konwitschny is determined by his left-wing political beliefs. The study focuses on some of the phenomena of Western (capitalist) society which are constantly subject to criticism in his productions. In addition to rejecting the patriarchal principles of the organisation of society, it is primarily the dependence of modern civilisation on materiality, the consumerist way of life, and the disruption of moral values which ensues from it.
