Summary/Abstract: Road traffic counts have been carried out in Hungary for more than a hundred and fifty years, the introduction of which was driven by technical and financial reasons. It has been recognized that the volume of traffic determines the amount of paving material required for road maintenance, so higher traffic requires more intensive maintenance, entailing higher financial costs. Consequently, during the series of traffic counts launched in 1869, traffic measurements were carried out first on state roads and later also on legislative roads. Based on archival sources, the study describes the preparation, technical details and conduct of 19th century road traffic counts, and presents the results of the 1870/1871, 1874 and 1894 counts by country parts.
