Summary/Abstract: One of the key priorities of the European Union's (EU) energy policy is to solve, or at least reduce, the problem of being forced to supply a significant and growing proportion of its energy needs from external sources. A frequently used indicator for determining the structure and proportion of energy supply is energy import dependence. The study briefly explores the methodological background of the energy import dependency indicator used by Eurostat and its alleged shortcomings, and describes in more detail the energy dependence of the 28 EU Member States between 2000 and 2016 and the trends observed in them, as well as the reality of the import dependence of nuclear and renewable energy sources, in order to approximate energy import dependence more precisely. In addition, the author has developed and describes – and compares it with the Eurostat indicator – an adjusted import dependency indicator in order to fill the methodological shortcomings. The study uses (optional) categorization to group Member States so that they can be well distinguished according to the characteristics of their import dependence.
