Summary/Abstract: The article presents changes in the spatial diversity of the social situation in the 21 largest urban agglomerations in Poland using a “hardship index” as its synthetic measure. The analysis of the changes in 2002-2016 illustrates the processes occurring between the core and the suburban zone of the urban agglomer-ations. Research conducted in 2002 indicated a better social situation in core cities in comparison to the subur-ban zones. The years 2002-2016 brought about a partial change (though not a reversal) of this ituation. Results of this research show also a strong variations within the group of suburban municipalities.
