Summary/Abstract: This study analyzes the plague epidemics that occurred in some of the cities, districts, and villages of western Anatolia and the Balkans (particularly in the administrative units connected with the province of Rud melia, among them Niğbolu, Selanik/Thessaloníki, Silistre, Köstendil, Çird men, etc.) by giving examples from the outbreaks of plague between the end of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. The economic conditions of the regions will be examined, reflected in the requests of red sidents regarding taxes and the State’s response, together with an analysis of the changes in demographic structure that were a result of deaths and temporary or permanent migration to other kazas and villages. This type of documentation is chiefly drawn from the Ottoman Prime Ministerial Archid ves (BOA) in İstanbul.
