Summary/Abstract: The author informs about the goals of the 2013 International Year of Statistics to increase public awareness of the power and impact of statistics on all aspects of society, nurturing statistics as a profession, especially among young people, and promoting creativity and development in the sciences of probability and statistics. He presents the Steering Committee, its activities, and explains why the year 2013 was selected. He also mentions the Polish statistics events which should be celebrated in 2013, and topics which could be developed.
