Summary/Abstract: During the 19th century, the Romanian astronomical studies were gradually integrated in the Romanian society. The defining moments in the evolution of theRomanian society, such as the end of the Phanariote era, the adoption of the OrganicRegulations, the Union of 1859, and the founding of the Universities of Iaşi (1860)and Bucharest (1864) all have had a profound impact on the development andintegration of science in the Romanian society during the 18th and 19th centuries. Theaim of this article is to provide an image of the development of the modernastronomical science in Romania, to show the important role of the Universities ofIaşi and Bucharest in the transition between premodern and modern astronomy, toexplore the biographies, the academic careers, and the scientific interests of theRomanian Professors of Astronomy and Geodesy from the Universities ofUniversities of Iaşi and Bucharest, underlining their role in the evolution ofAstronomy and Geodesy as academic disciplines, as well as their contribution to themodernisation of the Romanian society, by training new generations of scientists anddeveloping the Romanian scientific infrastructure.
