Summary/Abstract: Multiple local legends appeared because of the lack of accurate translations of the Greek epitaphs in the maritime cemetery of Sulina. The present paper aims toenlighten the inscriptions of the Greek population, based on the results of in situresearches done between 2017 and 2019, to register the epitaphs for a subsequentanalysis of the decoded characteristics and symbols, to transliterate, and translatethem. The epitaphs prevalently originate from the golden age of Sulina harbour, duringthe Danube Commision presence in the region. The research will be focused on thosefunerary monuments belonging to the Greeks, written in Greek alphabet (between 1866and 1987), without considering the ones written in Latin alphabet, a confirmation ofthe decrease in the number of Greeks in Sulina and of the weakening of their contactwith their native land and other Greek speakers. The paper aims to highlight theimportance of the epitaphs for the local Greek community. Among the analysedinscriptions there are versified inscriptions of considerable extent, as well as smallinscriptions, placed on very imposing monuments, emphasizing the domination of anethnic group who possessed the most influential commercial and maritime positions.
