Summary/Abstract: Open innovation (OI) has been an important and constantly growing research theme for over a decade, however, its theoretical framework has been relatively under-researched. Although most authors agree that OI involves a wide range of innovation activities and that a firm’s capacities in the use of resources are critical to the innovation implementation. However, the effect of the open innovation implementation on the company’s financial growth is unclear. The research conducted is based on the theoretical framework available on the subject. The IT industry was selected, based that the fact that this is the industry’s capability of adapting all four of the open innovation tools. The paper will examine the effects of open innovation in the Bulgarian IT sector, the links between the IT companies’ economic growth in the span of a year and the results from analyzing the primary data. The open innovation index of the company that is derived from analyzing the primary data will be compared to the respective financial data (total operating revenue growth, net sales revenue growth, total liabilities growth, net debt growth). After examining the data and case studies available, trends in the Bulgarian IT industry will be identified and recommendations are provided.
