Summary/Abstract: Austrians view Hungarians (the only neighboring nation about which they did not indulge in derogatory or demeaning jokes) sympathetically, as their relatives. Our Hungarian cousins, uncles and aunts “actually” belong to us, only that nobody can really remember anymore how exactly we are supposed to be related to each other. We see them as our poor relatives, who once were better off, when we still had more to do with each other. We “really” do have a common history, which means that our history is also theirs, but not vice-versa. That is probably why Austrians hardly wrote anything about Hungarian history and why not a single edition of any history of Hungary was published in Austria during the 20th century.
