Summary/Abstract: The article examines the activity of Lauri Kettunen in the founding of the Mother Tongue Society on March 23, 1920 as well as in the development of its charter and in leading the Society during its first five years of operation. It describes the topics addressed by Kettunen at the conferences of the Society, his linguistic principles and his ties to Estonia after leaving the country. The article also looks at how Kettunen was received in Estonia after the war and briefly describes his role in different spheres of Estonian linguistics.
