A Sulejów request and a reborn crown

Summary/Abstract: Polish lands were ruled by individual princes during the breakdown of the district. The were attempts to unite these lands under one ruler. Władysław Łokietek was also a prince who tried to unite them. He gathered part of this lands in his hands. In order to strengthen his power and the unity of the Polish lands, he had to obtain the Pope’s consent for the royal coronation. For this purpose, he called a convention to Sulejów, during which a request was written to the Pope. It presented arguments in favour of the necessity of coronation. After diplomatic efforts of one of Polish bishops in Avignon, the Pope agreed to the coronation. It took place on 20 January 1320 in Cracow.
