Summary/Abstract: In this article, the author discusses different interpretations of impersonality as proposed by Russian and Polish researchers. It is noted that analyses of impersonality concentrate on four pivotal elements: person – grammatical subject – semantic subject – author, and in different paradigms impersonality means the lack of a grammatical subject, a semantic subject, an author, etc. The order of the elements reflects the direction of the linguistic analysis: starting with the morphological characteristics of the verb, it ends with the functional and semantic categories.
