Summary/Abstract: An account of the alternative theater movement of the late 1960s and 1970s in the West, from the author’s perspective coming of age at that time in the US. Cohen-Cruz emphasizes the alignment of political and cultural participation, the compatibility of individual expressivity and collective process, and the co-existence of experimentation and social engagement, tradition and innovation in the counter culture of that time – though it was also beset with gender contra- dictions. She tracks alternative theater as a source of community-based performance and social practice, as companies shifted from making theater for to making theater with groups of people.
