Summary/Abstract: The topic of national identity has had a prominent position in the sphere of social sciences and liberal arts in the past twenty years. Since 1989, many events in Europe, such as the break-up of multinational states in Central and Eastern Europe, including Czechoslovakia, the unification of Germany, the Maastricht Treaty and two waves of European Union (EU) enlargement, have caused scientists to focus their attention on the concept of the nation and national identity.
