ACTIVITIES OF THE ETHNOLOGICAL SOCIETY IN LVIV DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR AND IN THE INTERWAR PERIOD

Summary/Abstract: Towarzystwo Ludoznawcze [Ethnological Society] (since 1947 Polskie Towarzystwo Ludoznawcze [Polish Ethnological Society]) has been established in 1895 in Lviv. At the outbreak of the First World War it was not even twenty years old. Among its members were academic staff of the universities (mainly representatives of philological and historical sciences, including ethnographers and ethnologists), directors and teachers of schools, officials of the various institutions as well as “lovers” of folk culture. At the beginning of the described period the society had 280 members but decreased to 78 just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The society cooperated with academic establishments, institutions, societies and administrations of various levels, both inside the country and abroad. It conducted scientific research and popularization activities. It was publishing journals “Lud” [“Folk”] and “Prace Etnograficzne” [“Ethnographic Works”]. It conducted a broad exchange of domestic and foreign journals and publications. It kept the library. An important role during described period played Adam Fischer who was a long-term secretary of the society. The article has six parts: Administration and members; Activity during the First World War, Activity during twenty years of interwar period; Adam Fischer and his relation with the Ethnological Society; Publishing activity of the Ethnological Society between 1914 and 1939; Cooperation between Polish Ethnological Society [Polskie Towarzystwo Ludozawcze] and Polish Ethnological Association [Polskie Towarzystwo Etnologiczne].
