VERBAL HUMOROUS ELEMENTS IN PICTURE STORY BOOKS

Summary/Abstract: It was aimed with the current study to investigate the suitability of the verbal humour elements in the picture story books written by Turkish writers to the humour development of preschool students. The evocatory nature of humour its contribution to child development and the lack of researches in this field make the study significant. In the study which was planned in descriptive design out of qualitative research methods, document analysis was used. The working group of the study was made up of 67 picture story books with a humorous content in Turkish language written between the years 2008 and 2018. The data in the research was obtained using “The Investigation Form of the Humorous Content Taking Place in the Picture Books for Children”. This form was made up of three sub-dimensions as visual humour, verbal humour and casual humour, 45 items in total. As the picture story books were just investigated verbally in the current study, only the verbal humour element which was made up of twenty categories in the form was used. Depending on the results of the research, it was found that preschool period children focused on verbal humour elements in the picture story books suitable for their humorous developments. In some picture story books, it was partly found that some verbal humour elements suitable for the humorous development of children at the age of seven and over, which is not suitable for the humour development of preschool students were given.
