Summary/Abstract: This work reviews the studies of two most distinguished representatives of demographic thought in Bulgaria. The first large official publication after the Liberation which analyses the economic development and demographic trends till 1911 belongs to the then Director of the Chief Direction of statistics, Kiril Popov. In it he can be seen as an exclusively knowledgeable and competent statistician who concludes a full analysis of the status and development of the Bulgarian population. By using the data from the first several population censuses in Bulgaria that were made according to the then modern European programs, he not only investigates trends but also discusses categories and essence of demographic indicators, A continuation of the research of K. Popov was done by the first professor of statistics and demography in the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridsky", Georgi Danailov. He uses the analysis of the population change till 1923 in order to define the laws of demographic processes in Bulgaria and discusses their patterns specific by social and ethnical groups. In his University courses he includes the most modern methods of demographic analyses and the prevailing at that time conceptions of the subject and character of demography as a science of population. Thus the first researchers that carry out empirical analyses have also their personal relation to the development of the theory of demography in other countries and contribute to the information of specialists in demography in Bulgaria.
