“Facial” Expression of Dramaticality: Close Up

Summary/Abstract: Close up portraits frequently observed in today’s art are addressed in this study within the context of the concept of dramaticality. This context is founded upon the impact of cinema on portraits. Nowadays it is observed that dramaticality in portraits has strikingly intensified with the increase in the size of canvass, and enlargement of the area that the face covers. It was first discovered in the movies at the beginning of the 20th century that focusing on the face by such changes in the scales enhances the dramatic effect. In the following period, portraits and even faces on canvass are observed among the pictures with larger scales. Today, portraits have become a type highlighting the facial emotions rather than being just used for the identification and definition of identity. In this study, history of portraits has been mentioned briefly on the basis of the concept of dramaticality. In the following parts, close shots in movies and approaches of today’s painters are examined.
