Summary/Abstract: Progress in Fine Art printing techniques and British artist Hughie O’Donoghue’s unique interpretation of collagraphic methods are presented as a means to achieve artistic creativity. Eager to bring to life the memories of war as told by his father and keen to break free of the limitations of ideation, O’Donoghue turned to new methods, tools and materials. He studied the masterpieces of Rembrandt, El Greco and Van Gogh, and emulated their techniques that lead him to develop unique approaches. O’Donoghue studied collagraphy techniques used by artists Howard Hodgkin, Antoni Tàpies and Ian McKeever and advanced them to a different level. Such unique approaches include application of a mixture of carborundum with acrylics on canvas and development of print processes such as conjoining individual panels to create the large dimensions of his paintings. O’Donoghue strove to unify the expressionist Willem de Kooning’s approach, in which abstraction deformed towards the figure, with that of the School of London artists such as Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff in which figure is displaced towards abstraction. Using collagraphy, relief, etching, inking and colouring techniques with varying combinations altogether, the artist has produced very large and impressive print paintings successfully.
