Summary/Abstract: The need for a holistic approach that recognizes that violence against women is a form of discrimination and subordination of women at structural and individual level, and the recognition that these violent acts are the result of interaction between individual, familial, social factors and in the community leads to the need for a multidisciplinary point of view regarding the strategy of prevention and protection at all levels of society. The traditional approach to human rights seems to have excluded victims of domestic violence. Conventional perception on human rights is that the law has evolved for the purpose of protecting individuals from excessive intervention or abuse of power by the state. Fundamental rights protect individuals, for example, against police intervention during interrogation, but not if they are assaulted by a partner.
