Summary/Abstract: Public access to a series of lesser known medieval documents, particularly to a new Portolan type of map made by Giovanni da Carignano (1250-1329), today allows for a new type of approach concerning the first construction phase of the Turnu Fortress near Turnu-Măgurele, Romania. Therefore, by having such an early cartographic attestation of Turnu (around 1300), the hypothesis that the fortress was built at the end of the 14th century by the Wallachian ruler Mircea the Elder is no longer valid. In this paper I attempt to bring a series of explanations, supported by the evidence found on site, to promote the idea that the Turnu Fortress was built much earlier, possibly in the Roman epoch.
