Summary/Abstract: It has been almost three decades since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the process of transition to democracy and to a new place in the new geopolitical context is still, to varying degrees, in pending or even reversed for many of the former soviet states. The region is afflicted by instability, week democracy, conflicts or even war, the situation posing great risks not only for the countries within but also for the entire European security system. With this in mind, the article addresses the evolution of ex-soviet states by appealing to the concept of governance that with the multiplication of global challenges gain more and more relevance to the point of being considered the decisive element in modern states evolution. By applying case study and comparative research methods, the paper aims to tackle the following research questions: How governance performances reflected in the overall evolution of post-soviet states and influenced their geopolitical positioning? Was quality of governance the determining factor that led to their transition success or failure?
