Summary/Abstract: The information society term has been used since the 60ties of the 20th century. The article offers a critical analysis of twenty definitions derived from books, articles, and government documents. The author lists the aspects of the information society the most and the least popular among their authors. It presents explanations evaluated as the most valuable. Basing on the analysis, the author offers her own definition of an information society.
