John Hunyadi, John Capistran and the Transylvanian Orthodox Church: New Evidence on the Greek Archbishop John “de Caffa”

Summary/Abstract: The presence of John of Caffa, Greek rite archbishop, in Transylvania (1455-1456) was viewed as an ecclesiological consequence of the Council of Florence. Coming from abroad, in the framework of the matrimonial agreement between the families Hunyadi and Cilly-Branković, he was arrested in early 1456 at the order of John (Iancu) Hunyadi and was subjected to a detailed inquisition trial by John Capestran (Giovanni da Capestrano, O.F.M.). A tradition recorded by Lucas Wadding, the Historian of the Franciscan Order, taken from the writings of the Polish scholar Piotr Skarga, told that, after giving up his “doctrine errors”, the Greek rite archbishop was sent to Rome in view of having his archbishop authority recognized and that he played and important role in supporting the unification of the Churches. Two new sources, recently found in the Vatican Secret Archives and in the State Archives in Genoa, confirm this tradition and bring new elements that could help understanding the complex realities of the Transylvanian church in the second half of the XVth century.
