Summary/Abstract: The main aim of the work is to determine the importance of new towns in the settlement system of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship as compared with their general socio-economic situation. To this end, a research procedure involving four stages has been carried out. The first stage involved the basic characteristics of the settlement system in Wielkopolskie Voivodeship. The second one presented the processes of transforming regions into towns in the country and Wielkopolskie Voivodeship. The third stage was devoted to the importance of new towns in the urbanisation process of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship. In the last, fourth stage of the work, use was made of the survey results on the basis of which the socio-economic situation of the new towns of the investigated region was discussed. The analysis covered six centres of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship which regained city rights after 1989. These are: Obrzycko (restitution of city rights in 1990), Nekla (2000), Dobrzyca (2014), Chocz (2015), Jaraczewo (2016), and Opatówek (2017). The research conducted shows that the new towns have diversified socio-economic potential and play a relatively minor role in the urbanisation process of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship. The significance of new towns as centres performing commercial, educational and healthcare functions grow at the local level.
