Summary/Abstract: After the collapse of the Soviet Union in Russian intellectualsocieties became fashionable to appeal to the geographic space andits influence on current policy. The resurgence of geopolitics as a fieldof knowledge and forms of reflection on international affairs resultedin a sharp increase in publications on the subject of Russianresearchers, politicians and journalists. Among them, a special placeoccupied Vadim Tsymburskiy (1957-2009), academic scholar, philosopher and geopolitician. He created an original geopoliticalthought, including Island Russia concept and the Grand Limitrof (inRussian: Velyky Limitrof) that entered the canon of modern Russian geopolitics. Tsymburskiy came out from the assumption that Russia isa separate civilization, “island” separated from the world by the GrandLimitrof – frontiers stretching from the Gulf of Finland by Central andEastern Europe, Central Asia, Mongolia to the Pacific’s shores. Anarticle focuses on the importance and the impact of Tsymbursky’sthought on contemporary Russian policy, including relations with theso-called near abroad
