Summary/Abstract: The present article examines how the antemurale topos has been used in literature and journalism in Croatia since the beginning of the 1990s. Based on various exemplary texts, it shows how the notion of being the bulwark of Christianity was embedded in the cultural discourse in order to establish concepts of boundaries, to describe threat scenarios and the "national struggle for existence", to affirm the ties with Europe, but also to express the resentment of and disappointment about the European protagonists. Especially in the course of Croatia' s geopolitical (re)positioning after the disintegration of Yugoslavia the different modes of using the antemurale topos reflect the complexity of the processes related to nation building: strategies of cultural inclusion or exclusion, the appeal for support, the simultaneity of the processes of nationalization and Europeanization, die reorganisation of remembrance culture, but also attempts to overcome ethnonational attitudes.
