Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to examine the inequality of opportunity in income distributions in Turkey in the 12 years between 2005 and 2017. As a normative equality theory, inequality of opportunity is a measure of the loss of utility that individuals experience out of their will and are not able to compensate the loss with their efforts and choices. In recent years, numerous empirical studies have been conducted on the inequality of opportunities in different countries and as comparative crosscountry analysis. Especially, due to a lack of basic information about the family background in existing datasets, the research in this field has been limited in Turkey. This paper uses the Household Income and Living Conditions Survey, which is conducted on an annual basis by TURKSTAT. Statistical methods are used to compete the lacking information about the family background, which made inequality of opportunity analysis possible. In the study, the differences in income distribution were examined on the basis of gender, education level of parents and the region of residence, and the inequalities due to these factors were revealed in detail. By repeating the analysis for the young population between the ages of 25-35, the inequality of opportunity experienced by the individuals who have just entered the labor market and its subcomponents are examined. Since the reference years of the study include the period of economic crisis, the relationship between inequality of opportunity and economic crisis and its consequences for the total and the young populations are also discussed.
