Summary/Abstract: This study presents the role, importance and necessity of the computer in Hungarian dialectology from a historical viewpoint. The road leads from the first experiment – the unfinished process of digitalization of the A magyar nyelvjárások atlasza (The atlas of Hungarian dialects) – to the “Speaking atlas”. The atlases created between these two – A romániai magyar nyelvjárások atlasza (The atlas of Hungarian dialects in Romania), Szilágysági nyelvatlasz (The linguistic atlas of Szilágyság), Medvesalja magyar nyelvjárási atlasza (The atlas of Hungarian dialects in Medvesalja), Többdimenziós nyelvföldrajzi térképlapok (Multidimentional linguistic maps) – represent important stages in the development of digital and computational techniques in the research of Hungarian dialects.
