Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to evaluate the person and the pontificate of Saint John Paul II due to the centenary of his birth. The research program was implemented on the basis of a modified survey “Poles and the Pope” prepared by Fr. prof. Makselon. The group of respond ents was composed of students of the Third Age University at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow. Among the 176 respondents aged 61 to 75, women constituted 88.6% and men 11.4%. The respondents were firm Catholic believers (59.7%) and believers (35.8%), characterized by high religious practices. According to the survey, St. John Paul II was the Governor of Christ (49.3%), head of the Catholic Church (13.2%) and the highest moral authority (19.1%). He was seen as a man of deep faith (27.1%), wisdom (21.7%) and power of spirit (12.2%). The main achievements of the pontificate were: the restoration of faith (32.5%), the overthrow of communism (28.5%) and pilgrimages to many countries (26.1%). The most important topics of papal teaching included issues of faith (19.2%), love for the homeland (16.7%), marriage and family (15%). The respondents declare that they are ready to work on themselves to implement papal teaching. However, they are aware of difficulties ahead, so they often (49.4%) and even daily (30%) pray asking St. John Paul II to intercede with the Lord on their behalves. The respondents also remember to pray for their children and grandchildren (29.2%), for the consent in their homeland (25.4%) and for their health (22.6%).
