Summary/Abstract: Nikody demonstrates that the process of administering transitional justice begins long before the fall of an authoritarian regime. One of the fields where such practices may take root is non-fictional literature, especially reportage. Nikody proposes to count reportage – a virtual space of indictment – as part of the initial phase of bringing perpetrators to reckoning. Once a regime has fallen, reportages provide testimonies that can be used by judicial institutions. In democratic countries that have completed the transition period, the virtual tribunal will complement the processes of settling the past. Literature in this context becomes a social institution – a “virtual,” textual, “preliminary” truth commission.
