Summary/Abstract: Reading Jowita Guja’s monograph Soteriologia ateizmu jako nowa antropologia [Soteriology of Atheism as a New Anthropology], Wróbel explores two concepts of atheism. The first is related to Hegel’s notion of the death of God, the second to Darwin’s expulsion of the gods from nature. For Wróbel, this is a promising juxtaposition because it accommodates a synthesis of conceptual atheism and naturalised atheism. Hegel stands for speculative philosophy, which attempts to react to the heritage of Christianity, which Darwin represents his own philosophy, which has a scientistic orientation and reacts against “the return of religion” in the contemporary world. The heritage of Hegel is the heritage of all conceptual philosophy. Darwin’s heritage is related to the work of the “enlightenment atheists” who think about life and the mind in terms of “reverse engineering” and “the blind watchmaker”. Wróbel asks if these two forms of atheism converge, conceptually and politically, or if they simply ignore or exclude one another. He also examines the vision of humanity that each of them gives rise to.
