Summary/Abstract: Unchanged reproduction of a study published on pages 541–555 of issue 12 in the eight volume of our journal. Following international comparisons on territorial population concentration, the study analyses the population development of Budapest and its metropolitan area before 1950, as well as the related post-1950 population trends,highlighting the role of natural reproduction and immigration. The author explains the consequences of overpopulation and draws attention to the need to take action as soon as possible to eliminate overcrowding meeting the communal, housing, cultural, health, transport,etc. needs of the population of the capital, whichis already too large and growing, and preventing further population growth to reduce the burden on the economy.
