Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the extremely urgent problem of national identity; the authors consider a development of relations between European peoples. The journalism of Britain at the beginning of the 18th century (namely, Joseph Addison and Richard Steele’s vision of a foreigner) was chosen as the subject of the research. These persons were creators of the famous journals «Spectator» and «Free-holder». The purpose of the article is to identify Addison and Steel’s relationship to various peoples of Europe. The researchers have the following tasks: to consider the image of France as the main Britain opponent; analysis images of recent significant «enemies» (on the Spain and Scotland examples); characteristic of allied and neutral countries for Britain. The authors conclude that a vision of foreigners in those journals is founded for the personal objections of publicists as proponents of wig politics. Addison and Steele gave their assessment to representatives of some neighboring European peoples, different in meaning and status for the Englishman. The centuries-old confrontation with France reflected the political priorities of the authors. They showed how the power of French tyrants was vicious (in the person of Louis XIV). Other peoples of Europe were also endowed with certain qualities. The image of Spain is a critique of tyranny; Holland is an example of a trading power; Germany plays a significant role in the «legitimization» of the King George I’s figure; the image of Italy is tied to the traditions of Antiquity; Russia is an example the enlightened monarch’s rule.
