Summary/Abstract: As of 19th Century, innovations and changes were made in the maritime commerce in the Ottoman State as well as in the Naval Forces. Engineers (Naval Mechanical Engineers) were needed in order for commercial ships and boats to travel in a careful manner. The duty of the naval engineers is in fact difficulty in terms of working conditions and responsibilities. In addition, it is not possible to fill the gap in employment of such an important profession like naval engineering by employing qualified employees. At first, the gap in the employment in this field was filled with foreign specialists and engineers. However, foreigners demanded more wages and were not adequate for commercial ships and boats, and therefore, native engineers were employed. Employing native engineers made the companies feel comfortable both in terms of security and economics. The employment process of naval engineers in the Ottoman maritime commerce companies have been investigated below.
