Summary/Abstract: The author starts with the general characteristic of authority. Then he sketches philosophical background which shaped the political life in the ancient Greece. He discusses the Pythagorean conception of the grounds of civil virtue, reveals the danger of delusive virtue which undermines authority, determines the objective grounds of authority with analyzing such conceptions as ideal republic, perfect ruler, and the authority of law in the light of the considerations of Plato and Aristotle.
