Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to give an illustrative and typological picture of the way neologisms can be (and are actually) used in Romanian to generate humor and irony. When misuse and distortion of word usage (mainly through ‘barbarisms’) occur, involuntary humour is likely to step in. In this context, linguistic standardization could be seen as a (cultural) antidote to such cases of linguistic impropriety and sheer howlers.
