Summary/Abstract: The study discusses some fragments from a diary covering the 1916 and 1917 campaigns and a part of the year 1918, which provide interesting data about the moral state and the hero- ism of the soldiers commanded by lieutenant (and next captain) Alexandru D. Madgearu. His daily notes recorded the evolution from enthusiasm to despair, and the difficulties caused by the incompetence of some superior officers, by the contradictory orders, and by the lack of care for the food and equipment of the troop.
