Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present the status of the authorities of the Catholic Church, bodies of self-government units as well as third parties in the procedure of appointing a patron saint of a local community. Special consideration is given to the status of local government units in light of the principle of impartiality of public authorities (art. 25 para. 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland). The paper also discusses the problem of evaluating the proposals submitted by church authorities and local residents. The author pays attention to the relations between civil and ecclesiastical authority at various stages of the procedure in question, taking into account the principles governing the institutional relations between the state and churches and other religious organisations in Poland.
