Summary/Abstract: The establishment of the “Phanariot regime” in Moldavia (1711) and Wallachia (1716) had, among other things, negative consequences for the military organization of the two Romanian principalities. Phanariot princes, starting with the Mavrocordats, have greatly reduced the number of armed forces of the two countries, although there was no specific request from the Ottoman Empire in this regard. Phanariotes sought to transform domestic military groups into tax categories, relying in particular on the groups of foreign Balkan and Eastern mercenaries. The present study aims at an issue which was not insisted on during previous research, namely the wages and gifts that these Balkan and Turkey hirelings received from Phanariot princes for their jobs.
