Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the changes in the Bulgarian lexical system after 1990, and more precisely the relationship between оutdated lexical units and contemporary lexical competence. The research includes a questionnaire given to 300 students (born between 2001 and 2003). The respondents had to explain the meanings of 10 words which are not used anymore or have more than one meaning. The results show that the students are not well acquainted with the semantics of most of the historisms and аrchaisms, which implies low lexical competence with regard to the outdated lexical units.
