Summary/Abstract: Modality tends to be approached as one of the extremely complex grammatical, semantic and pragmatic categories. In this sense, modal verbs (which, in the narrower sense, include morati, trebati, smjeti, moći, htjeti) represent only one of several possible ways of expressing modality. This paper deals with the types of modality in general, and special attention is paid to those types that are marked by modal verbs. We will also focus on the difference between the so-called objective and subjective modality. Finally, we will analyse the pragmatic aspects of modality.
