Summary/Abstract: The paper addresses the question of how adequate the standard interpretation (or conception) of Cartesian dualism is, given the complexity of Cartesian texts. Ryle’s “ghost in the machine dogma” and Gilson’s concept of angel in the human body are exempla grata of the standard interpretation. The current paper draws the following general conclusions. First, the standard interpretation commits “the Straw Man Fallacy”, that is, violates “the Principle of Charity”. Second, contradictions are a particularly striking feature of the Cartesian texts and testify to the dialectical nature of the texts.
