Summary/Abstract: An exhaustive research on the basis of a considerable sample (N = 1001) was made and shows primary mathematical competences of pupils coming to form. The research was carried out in the first part of September. The results gave information how pupils understand numbers and figures, how they manage to calculate mere sums and differences, how they understand ordered sequence of numbers, and what their primary number – writing achievements are. It was stated that pupils perfectly count things and can signify their amount by figures; can perfectly count up to ten; they are familiar with ordinal numbers (third, fifth, ninth); most of them know numbers up to 60; most of them perfectly sum up to 10; a part of them is acquainted with the sum of double figures and are rather good calculating cents and writing the result. The research highlighted differences in achievements between pupils from the schools of bigger towns and other places. Pupils’ from schools and kindergartens in towns achievements in mathematics are considerably better.
